C U B A pt II

{around havana}

{out in viƱales}

{hemingway house}

{dad's old neighborhood, cojimar}

{tropicana night}

{hospital where dad was born}

 {museo de la revolucion}

{varadero}

my dad left cuba with his family when he was 3 years old. my abuela likes to tell a story about their journey to the U.S., when the family was sitting and waiting for their visas in panama. while the rest of the kids were sitting quietly, my dad was on his feet shouting songs about the revolution, unaware of the gravity of the situation. a few hours later, the family was bound for chicago to meet up with relatives, and then ended up settling in miami a few years after that.

everyone we met in cuba seemed to have a relative in miami - a daughter or son or friend from a younger generation (read: my own) who had the opportunity to branch out and start a new life in the U.S. thanks to the past administration, there has been an influx of americans traveling to cuba in the past year or two. the increased attention to tourism was evident everywhere we went, yet there was still a stark division between the cuba that a tourist experiences versus the cuba that a cuban lives day in and day out.

"they tried to bury us, but they didn't know that we were seeds."
